How to Choose the Right Image Format

Learn when to use JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG. Compare image quality, transparency, animation and file size before converting.

Start with the purpose

The best image format depends on where the image will be used. A photograph, a transparent logo and a simple icon have different needs. Before converting, decide whether you need transparency, animation, small file size, or crisp lines at different sizes.

JPG / JPEG for photographs

JPEG is widely supported and usually works well for photographs and complex images with many colors. It uses lossy compression, so repeated saving or aggressive compression can reduce detail. Use a moderate quality setting and compare the result with the original.

PNG for transparency and sharp edges

PNG supports lossless compression and transparency, making it useful for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images with text. Photographs saved as PNG can be much larger than JPEG or WebP, so use it when its strengths matter.

WebP for web delivery

WebP supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency. It can often provide a smaller file than older formats at similar visual quality. Check that your target app or workflow supports WebP before converting a batch.

GIF and SVG have different jobs

GIF is mainly useful for simple short animations and limited-color graphics; it is not ideal for high-quality photographs. SVG is a vector format suited to icons, diagrams and logos that need to scale cleanly. Do not expect SVG to behave like a normal photograph.

A safe conversion workflow

Keep an untouched original. Resize to the dimensions actually needed, choose a format based on purpose, and compare the output at normal viewing size. Check transparency, color, sharp edges and file size. If the image contains sensitive information, remove metadata when appropriate and use only tools whose processing behavior you understand.
