Image Resizing for Websites: Dimensions and Quality
A guide to selecting image dimensions, aspect ratios and compression settings for faster pages and clear visuals.
Use the dimensions you need
An image displayed at 600 pixels wide usually does not need to be uploaded at 5000 pixels wide unless a high-density display or zoom feature requires it. Oversized images waste bandwidth and can slow pages.
Preserve the aspect ratio
Keep the original width-to-height ratio when resizing unless you intentionally want a crop or stretch. Stretching changes proportions; cropping removes part of the image. Preview the result before saving.
Choose a suitable format
Photographs often work well as JPEG or WebP, while transparent graphics and screenshots may benefit from PNG or WebP. Compare the output visually rather than relying on file size alone.
Compress after resizing
Resizing first can reduce the amount of data that must be compressed. Use a moderate quality setting and inspect fine edges, text and gradients. Avoid repeatedly compressing the same file.
Create responsive variants when needed
Websites may use different image sizes for mobile, tablet and desktop layouts. If you manage a website, generate appropriately sized variants and use responsive image markup where possible rather than sending the largest asset to every device.
Do not forget accessibility
Give meaningful images descriptive alt text in the website markup. Keep text that communicates essential information as real text where possible, rather than embedding all of it inside an image.
