File Privacy & Safety
Understand how to handle files carefully with online tools.
Not every web tool processes files in the same way. Some operations may run inside your browser; others may send data to a third-party service or server. Do not assume a file stays on your device unless the specific tool clearly explains its processing method.
Before selecting a file
Read the tool’s on-page privacy notes and the website privacy policy. Avoid uploading identity documents, medical records, financial statements, confidential work files, or other sensitive material to a service unless you have reviewed its data handling and are comfortable with it.
Local processing versus server processing
Browser-based processing can keep the file on your device, but external libraries, analytics, and AI APIs may still communicate with other services. Server-based processing can require transmitting the file to a remote system. The actual behaviour depends on each implementation; a general website statement should not replace tool-specific information.
Safer habits
- Use a copy of the original and remove unnecessary personal information.
- Use a trusted, updated browser and avoid public computers for sensitive work.
- Check downloads before opening them and avoid tools that redirect unexpectedly.
- Delete temporary outputs you no longer need, especially on shared devices.
- Do not use a tool to process content you do not have the right to access or modify.
Understand limitations
Online tools can have file-size, format, browser-memory, or service-availability limits. Verify outputs before relying on them. For regulated or highly confidential files, use an approved offline application or an organisation-authorised service.
About this guide: This is general practical information. Always review the output and the requirements of the service where you plan to use the file.
