How to Reduce Video File Size

Understand resolution, frame rate, bitrate and format so you can shrink a video for sharing without unnecessary quality loss.

Start with the destination

A video for messaging or a website usually does not need the same bitrate as a master copy for editing. Decide the target platform, maximum file size and desired resolution before changing settings.

Resolution and frame rate

Resolution controls the number of pixels in each frame. Lowering 4K footage to 1080p can reduce file size substantially when 4K is unnecessary. Frame rate affects motion smoothness and data use; keep the source frame rate when possible unless the destination has a specific requirement.

Bitrate and codec

Bitrate is a major factor in file size and quality. Too low a bitrate creates blockiness and smearing, especially during fast motion. More efficient codecs can reduce size at similar quality, but compatibility varies across devices and apps. Check the target platform before choosing a less common format.

Audio matters too

High-bitrate audio adds to total size. For speech, a sensible audio bitrate may be sufficient; music and high-fidelity material may need more. Listen to the exported file and check that audio remains synchronized.

Export a short test

If the video is long, export a short representative section first. Inspect fast movement, fine detail, gradients, subtitles and dark scenes. Once the quality is acceptable, apply the same settings to the full video.

Keep a master copy

Do not overwrite the original. Re-encoding an already compressed file repeatedly can compound quality loss. Store a high-quality master and create smaller sharing copies from it.
